Home Remedy for Cough
There are many different contributing factors that may cause a cough. This post and the home remedy for cough is directed to acute coughs which usually begin suddenly and is generally caused by flu, cold or a sinus infection. The remedies discussed are not related to asthmatic or other bronchial related coughs.
According to The Healing Power of Foods by Dr Pamplona Roger, “Cough is the most common symptom of respiratory disease. In reality, coughing is the body’s defense mechanism to expel foreign or irritating substances from the bronchial tubes”
As with all the remedies mentioned in this entire blog, it all starts from our diet. What we eat and don’t eat plays the most vital part in preventing and repairing sicknesses. There are certain foods that can help to eliminate the causes of cough and relieve it, while others definitely makes it worse
A diet that is recommended includes increasing our consumption of foods like Onion, Honey, Lemon, Vitamins A and Vitamin C. While foods such as salt and dairy products are definitely no no’s. It is known that dairy products increases mucus production, which may trigger or aggravate cough.
Onion: Breathing the essence released by a raw onion is in most situations enough to get rid of a cough. The onion’s surfer compound reduces the formation and growth of mucus and to top it off, it also has antibiotic properties. Chopping one medium size to large onion and placing it in a glass at your bedside table before going to sleep, will help to stop coughing for the following morning. The onion may also be chopped the same way, placed in a container and used like smelling salts. A different onion should be used every day.
Garlic: This may be used in more than one ways. Crush 2 to 3 cloves of garlic and place them in 4 to 5 average glasses of water and let it boil for a minimum of 15 minutes then let it cool. Then sweeten with honey and tak as a worm beverage. the process may be repeated 2 to 3 times.
Another process is, grate or chop 4 cloves of garlic and pour 3 to 4 tablespoons of honey on it. This should be stored in a jar or any non-plastic container with a cover. Take one teaspoon every day.
Bitter Orange and Honey: This remedy came directly from mom. Place a large bitter
orange in the oven to bake for 5 to 7 do not remove the skin. Then take it out of the oven, scoop out the gut into a cup and pour about 7 tablespoons of honey on the pulp (More Honey may be added for preference). Then squeeze the juice from the pulp and mix it with the honey, do not remove the fibers of the gut from the cup. The dosage for this is simple, do not drink the mixture but instead, take a small sip as long as the cough continues.
